July 3, 2017

Laughter, hugs, and more hugs filled the room as more than 100 gathered to celebrate this year’s academic scholarship recipients on Saturday, June 24, at the UTSA Downtown Campus.

A total of 586 scholarships were awarded to deserving college-bound students from 77 donor- related funds. In all, more than $2.9 million was awarded.

Students, parents and scholarship donors shared a meal followed by a program geared toward helping students and their parents prepare for the first-year of college.

Dist. 7 Councilwoman Ana Sandoval, keynote speaker for the event, delivered an insightful and fun glimpse of her life and her college beginnings. She ended with several useful tips to help students on their new journey.

Rosie Castro, activist and mother of U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro and Julian Castro, former U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development and former mayor of San Antonio, offered practical advice to parents. She described the anxiety she felt as her sons left for college and she offered tips on how parents can get help with travel expenses when visiting their students.

Previous scholarship recipients Arizbeth Posada, now communications specialist at the San Antonio Area Foundation, and Omar Rodriguez, a soon-to-be graduate from The University of Texas at San Antonio, also offered tips and insight to help students maneuver the first-year of college.
