Director of Planned Giving shares tips on how to launch a planned giving program

Forty-two participants sat still, intently listening to the one thing everyone wanted to know – how to start a planned giving program.

David Davenport, CFRE, and director of Planned Giving at the San Antonio Area Foundation, shared tips and best practices on how to start-up or relaunch a well-rounded program. The workshop, So You Want to Start a Planned Giving Program, was held June 27 at the Area Foundation.

Topics included how to properly integrate a donor’s personal goals, financial goals, estate planning goals and charitable goals into a plan; the explanation of cash vs. wealth; important items to remember when creating planned giving vehicles; and important things to remember when setting up a planned giving governing board. 

The workshop ended with an in-depth explanation on various planned giving instruments including bequests, charitable gift annuities, lead/remainder trusts and others.
