Area Foundation offers scholarship application tips

SAN ANTONIO (Aug. 13, 2019) -- As high school and college students prepare for a new school year, there’s something else they should keep in mind: preparing for success in applying for scholarships.

The San Antonio Area Foundation will begin accepting applications for its 2020 scholarship funding cycle in December.

Until then, students interested in receiving scholarship funding should spend the next few months preparing. Tips include volunteering at local nonprofits, maintaining good grades, creating a list of all awards and certificates, writing about experiences that have molded or shaped their life, completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application starting in October of the student’s senior year, planning letters of recommendation, and more.

More information and resources to help students identify scholarship opportunities and be successful in school can be found at Scholarships.

The Area Foundation awarded more than $5.2 million in scholarships to approximately 800 graduating high school students and current college students this year. Through the generosity of its donors, the Area Foundation has awarded more than $23 million to more than 4,000 students in the past 10 years.

“We are passionate about working with our donors to help students achieve their educational goals,” said Marjie French, CEO of the Area Foundation. “Scholarships create a pathway to end generational poverty while strengthening the economic development of our community.”

The Area Foundation has more than 100 scholarship funds available, each with its own criteria. Some scholarships fund a student’s education in a specific area of study, such as health care or engineering. Other funds help students attend a particular college or university or award scholarships to students from a specific high school.
