Area Foundation helps create field of dreams for East Side club

SAN ANTONIO (Oct. 17, 2019) – The first pitch of the season is set to take place on the newest addition at the Boys and Girls Clubs of San Antonio.

Marjie French, CEO of the San Antonio Area Foundation, and others were on hand to celebrate the opening of the organization’s new sports complex. A $500,000 contribution from the John L. Santikos Charitable Foundation, a fund of the Area Foundation, helped pay for synthetic turf baseball and softball fields, and large cultivated spaces for soccer and youth football. There’s also new lighting and a new concession stand for game-time refreshments.

The contribution is part of a 2018 JLS grant to help nonprofits pay for capital improvements. Through a selective process, six organizations were awarded a total of $3 million.

“John L. Santikos entrusted his legacy to the San Antonio Area Foundation, and what better way to see his legacy in action,” said French. “Mr. Santikos believed that everyone deserved an opportunity to thrive and we are pleased today to lock arms with the Boys and Girls Clubs of San Antonio to create one of the best youth development parks in the area.”

The Boys and Girls Clubs of San Antonio is an 80-year-old organization that provides programs for 8,500 area youth, ages 6 to 18 years old. It is located on the East Side of the city, where playgrounds and programs are needed for area youth. The San Antonio facility is also part of Boys and Girls Clubs of America, which has been around for 153 years and serves 4.3 million youth throughout the country and on military bases around the world.
