John L. Santikos Micronaut Center breaks ground

SAN ANTONIO (March 27, 2019) – Hard hats, shovels and piles of sand were at the ready as San Antonio Colleges District prepared to break ground on the John L. Santikos Micronaut Center.

The 11,580 square foot center is part of a larger multi-purpose facility construction project to expand the Scobee Education Center, housed at San Antonio College, one of five community colleges in the Alamo Colleges District. The Scobee Education Center offers programs for children and adults to foster an interest in science, technology, and astronomy through hands-on learning experiences.

The addition of the John L. Santikos Micronaut Center means that more children will be educated in one of the nation’s first cradle-to-college STEM pathway programs. The Micronaut program capitalizes on the natural curiosity of young children through a simulated trip to the International Space Station. In the 2017-2018 academic year, alone, 500 children and 361 adults visited. Through funding provided by the John L. Santikos Charitable Foundation, a fund of the Area Foundation, the program is expected to grow to serve 1,700 youth annually.

The John L. Santikos addition is expected to be completed in spring 2021.
