Record number of scholarships awarded to students in June

SAN ANTONIO (June 19, 2019) - Donors from the San Antonio Area Foundation awarded over $5 million in scholarships to approximately 800 students in June, creating the pathway to end generational poverty, while strengthening the economic development of our community. Overall, in the past 10 years, over $23 million has been awarded to more than 4,000 students by Area Foundation donors.

During a scholarship reception held June 15 to honor the most recent awardees, an instant online poll of the more than 300 students and parents present revealed the importance of Area Foundation support through its reception, scholarships, and College Success program. The poll showed that many students feel unprepared for college, and compounding the situation, over a third of the attendees at the reception were first-generation college students.

David Robinson, Jr., then moderated a panel to share strategies for successfully navigating college. Panelists included a current Area Foundation scholarship recipient, a graduate student, and a parent. Topics discussed included how to structure your schedule to include study time, getting to know professors, talking with financial aid and counseling centers, and other strategies. Information was also shared about the Area Foundation’s available emergency support funding for scholarship recipients to ensure that a small event in a student’s life doesn’t end their college dreams.

Keynote speaker Vikki Carr, who is a multiple Grammy-award winning artist and philanthropist shared her passion for advancing education in the Latino community. Carr has been funding scholarships since the 1970s, proudly sending Latino students to Ivy League colleges. Carr announced that she joined forces with the San Antonio Area Foundation to deepen her scholarship commitment to include Bexar County students.

The next cycle to apply for Area Foundation scholarships opens in December of 2019. Until then, students can spend the next few months preparing. Tips include volunteering at local nonprofits, maintaining good grades, creating a list of all awards and certificates, writing about experiences that have molded or shaped their life, completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application starting in October of the student’s senior year, planning letters of recommendation, and more.
