Area Foundation part of change in Students + Startups Program

SAN ANTONIO (Nov. 21, 2019) -- Trinity University’s Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship together with the 80/20 Foundation have announced the transfer of operations of Students + Startups. The successful 10-week internship program led by Trinity and funded by 80/20 Foundation from 2016-19, will now be managed as a supporting organization of the San Antonio Area Foundation.

“As Students + Startups plans for the future and continued growth, we’re so excited to have been chosen as their partner,” said Marjie French, CEO of the San Antonio Area Foundation. “We will provide strategic support to the program and combined with the Area Foundation’s focus on youth success, together we hope to grow tech and entrepreneurial talent in our city.”

From 2016-2019, Trinity University’s Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship developed and lead, in collaboration with Geekdom and the 80/20 Foundation, a 10-week internship program for San Antonio startups that connects them to high-caliber university students. Founded initially for Trinity University students, these summer interns gained real-world experience in young, dynamic startups—learning about the multiple roles and skill sets early hires need in startups and exposing them to San Antonio’s growing entrepreneurial ecosystem.

“Startups and small businesses create the majority of jobs in the United States. We’re happy to have built this program that matches outstanding collegiate talent with the leading job growth opportunities in San Antonio,” said Luis Martinez, Ph.D., Trinity director for the Center of Innovation and Entrepreneurship. “Trinity was brought to San Antonio over 75 years ago to help build the city. We continue and expand that work today as this collaboration with the 80/20 Foundation rolls out as a separate nonprofit focused on bringing university students from around the country to San Antonio for this great internship program.”

In 2019, Trinity University and the 80/20 Foundation made the commitment to expand Students + Startups to include other university students as part of San Antonio’s commitment to improving the climate of local entrepreneurship through the National League of Cities’ Innovation Ecosystem Program. Eight additional universities, from across three states and six cities participated in 2019. Since its founding, over 180 summer interns have been placed at over 50 startups in San Antonio.

“The 80/20 Foundation is committed to attracting, growing, and retaining talent in San Antonio,” said Alexandra Frey, 80/20 Foundation executive director. “This nonprofit will have the singular focus of expanding Students + Startups to recruit the best and brightest from around the country to intern in our growing entrepreneurial ecosystem. Next year we intend to connect 90 students with even more companies, and create even more value for the San Antonio economy and growing startup scene.”

Students + Startups is a paid 10-week summer internship in San Antonio for university students from around the country.  With intern’s $4,000 wages partially subsidized by 80|20 Foundation, the program also includes free summer housing in downtown San Antonio, membership at Geekdom, and a $325 scholarship that can be used at a student’s respective university.

Applications for Students + Startups are open now until Jan. 21, 2020. Companies and students can apply at https://studentsstartups.com/.
