Sustaining Nonprofits: Area Foundation Prepares More than 60 for Board Governance

SAN ANTONIO (April 13, 2019) – Board members are crucial to the strategic direction of nonprofits, which makes those trained in this service -- valuable.

That’s why more than 60 new and existing board members took part in the San Antonio Area Foundation’s Board Boot Camp on April 13. The daylong workshop provided board governance training through comprehensive tips, tools, and case studies provided by certified trainer Jennifer Moriarity.

Along with ample information and interactive activities to reinforce learning, participants also heard from a panel of experts in the nonprofit sector who described their experiences with board service and nonprofit leadership. The panel was moderated by Rebecca “Becca” Brune, president and chief operating officer of the Area Foundation, and included Mike Gilliam, CEO of the San Antonio Lighthouse for the Blind; Sandy Morander, CEO of the YMCA of Greater San Antonio; and Michael Dippo, board chair of San Antonio Lighthouse for the Blind and an executive at SWBC.

Board Boot Camp is one of five board-related training services offered at the Area Foundation. Over the past six years nearly 2,500 individuals have been prepared for board membership.
