Dance competition nets thousands for nonprofits serving African American community

SAN ANTONIO (Aug. 22, 2019) – A total of $45,000 in grants were awarded to nonprofits serving San Antonio’s African American community, thanks to a successful Renaissance with the Stars event.

The annual fundraiser by the San Antonio Area African American Community Fund, an outreach fund of the San Antonio Area Foundation, featured local leaders showcasing their fancy dance steps. This year’s winner was the Very Rev. Kevin Faust, who not only raised the most money but also took home the night’s highest dancing score.

San Antonio Area Foundation board member, Janie Barrera was one of the featured dancers in this year’s event. Barrera, who is president and chief operating officer of LiftFund participated on behalf of a unique partnership between the African American Fund and her organization. The partnership funds African American entrepreneurs with business loans under the Dream Makers’ Program.

At least 800 attended the sold-out event at the Tobin Center for Performing Arts on Aug. 17. This year’s event was the most successful in the history of the San Antonio Area African American Community Fund.

Since 2010, SAAAACF has awarded more than $90,000 to charitable programs serving the African American community in San Antonio. To learn more, visit SAAACF.
