CEO Shares Six Years of Area Foundation Impact

Dear Friends,

I’m so happy and honored to be chosen as the new CEO of the San Antonio Area Foundation. This is an extraordinary time at the Area Foundation as we build upon the past and advance our future, together.

We are first and foremost dedicated to helping people make meaningful gifts to improve the quality of life in our community today and for generations to come. For over a half-century, the Area Foundation has been touching the lives of people who live in San Antonio and the surrounding communities and I am pleased to share with you a snapshot of who we are and the impact of our work.

Investing in the Sustainability of Nonprofits

  • Wells Center: a learning, leadership, and development center creating $11M in savings to the nonprofit community over a six-year period through the following:
    • No- to Low-Cost Meeting Space: Nearly 125,000 community members attended more than 6,300 events at our Wells Center, saving nonprofits more than $7 million dollars in comparable rental fees.
    • Quality Training Programs: Another nearly 17,000 nonprofit staff have attended more than 600 training classes equating to more than $4 million dollars in comparable savings.
  • We build leaders, skills and capacity for nonprofit staff and their board members.
    • Nearly 2,500 community leaders have been prepared for board membership over the past six years.
    • 545 nonprofit leaders have earned certifications or completed leadership development programs over the past six years.
    • A new partnership has been formed with a Fortune 100 company for implementation in 2019 that focuses on executive leadership.

Funding for Lasting and Significant Change

  • Grantmaking has grown-substantially in all areas and categories.
    • Scholarships have grown nearly 200% in the past six years, awarding $18M in total to thousands of deserving students.
    • Annual, responsive grantmaking has grown over 300%, with the average grant increasing to $25,000.
    • Multiple Fortune 500 companies have entrusted the Area Foundation since 2015 to administer hardship and disaster funds to their employees across all 50 states. More than 6,000 employees have received over $6 million in funds, enabling companies to charitably care for their own.

Inspiring Social Change through Convening and Collaborating

  • Many of San Antonio’s most successful social innovation efforts were incubated, inspired and invested in by the Area Foundation. Examples include:
    • “Animal No Kill”: This effort transformed San Antonio from the third worst city in the nation for live release rates (11% in 2006), to an impressive 92% in 2018.
    • Big Give SA: Through a partnership with the Nonprofit Council, the Area Foundation brought Big Give S.A. to our community, which has since raised $25 million in donations for nonprofits over the past six years.
    • Housing and Development: The Area Foundation helped establish a LISC office in San Antonio. Since 2016, LISC San Antonio has issued $23 million in loans, investments and grants, for affordable housing, community and commercial spaces.
    • Youth Services: The Area Foundation helped establish Excel Beyond the Bell-S.A. (now part of UP Partnership).  Excel Beyond the Bell-S.A. provides city-wide, out-of-school-time programs involving more than 40 partners serving thousands of youth.
    • Successfully Aging: The Area Foundation established Successfully Aging and Living in San Antonio (SALSA), which engages nearly 40 organizations focused on this population. This initiative has leveraged from national funders $1.5 million to support initial Area Foundation investments.
    • Research: The Area Foundation was part of a county-wide research effort to evaluate and find solutions to address mental health services for youth. The recently released study engaged more than 20 nonprofits providing these services.

Throughout this year I look forward to sharing how the Area Foundation continues to enhance the quality of life for people living in and around San Antonio. Look for updates on how we significantly enhance youth success, nurture seniors, enrich arts and culture and help make San Antonio a more livable and resilient community. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for your past, present, and future support of our collective vision of a community for all.
