Grants

The San Antonio Area Foundation makes grants from our funds, with help from our donors, to nonprofits improving the quality of life in Bexar County and the following surrounding counties: Frio, Atascosa, Karnes, Wilson, Guadalupe, Gonzales, Comal, Blanco, Kendall, Gillespie, Kerr, Bandera and Medina.

We offer grants in the following areas:

Animal Services

Animal services grants are awarded through our Community Grants process. Applications open mid-November with a deadline of early January. Funding is announced in mid-May. Grants are awarded on an annual basis to programs that enhance the quality of life for all animals, educate the community on responsible pet care and enhance spay/neuter and adoption services.

Arts & Culture

Arts and culture grants are awarded through our Community Grants process. Applications open mid-November with a deadline of early January. Funding is announced in mid-May. Grants are awarded on an annual basis to programs that develop audiences and strengthen locally influenced arts and artists using an innovative approach.

Biomedical Research

Applications open in early October, with a deadline of mid-November. Funding is announced in mid-March. Grants are awarded on an annual basis to programs in the areas of cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

Community & Human Services

Community and human services grants are awarded through our Community Grants process. Applications open in mid-November with a deadline of early January. Funding is announced in mid-May. Community and human services includes children and youth, the community at large and seniors. Grants are awarded on an annual basis to programs that improve the safety and welfare of vulnerable and under-served populations.

Medicine & Healthcare

Medicine and healthcare grants are awarded through our Community Grants process. Applications open in mid-November with a deadline of early January. Funding is announced in mid-May. Medicine and healthcare includes visual services. Grants are awarded on an annual basis to programs that enhance the quality of healthcare services, improve or increase access and availability of services and offer wellness services that improve health outcomes.

High School Completion

Applications open May 27, with a deadline of July 14. Funding will be announced October 23. Grants are awarded on an annual basis to out-of-school time programs that provide academic, recreational and cultural activities to keep middle school youth in school.

Strengthening Nonprofits

Grants are awarded in a two-phase process. Applications can be submitted any time throughout the year, with varying deadlines based on the phase of funding the organization applies for. Funding is available for leadership training, staff development, strategic planning, technology resources and other areas that will build the capacity of nonprofit organizations, enabling them to better fulfill their mission.

Programs Serving the African American population

The application process will open in early September. Please check back after September 5 for more information. To be eligible for funding, a program must serve a population that is at least 70 percent African American.

Applications open late July with a deadline in September. To be eligible for funding, a program must serve a population that is at least 51 percent Hispanic.
