Grants

The San Antonio Area Foundation makes grants from our funds, with help from our donors, to nonprofit organizations improving the quality of life in Bexar County and the following surrounding counties: Frio, Atascosa, Karnes, Wilson, Guadalupe, Gonzales, Comal, Blanco, Kendall, Gillespie, Kerr, Bandera and Medina.

We offer grants in the following areas:

Animal Services

Animal services grants are awarded through our Annual Responsive process. This application is currently closed. Applications open in June with a deadline in July. Funding is announced in November. Grants are awarded on an annual basis to programs that improve the health and wellness of animals, educate our community about animal care and/or provide spay/neuter and/or adoption services.

Arts and culture grants are awarded through our Annual Responsive process. This application is currently closed. Applications open in June with a deadline in July. Funding is announced in November. Grants are awarded on an annual basis to programs that promote accessibility to the arts, encourage broad participation from all parts of our community and/or provide arts education and outreach.

Biomedical Research

Grants are awarded on an annual basis to programs in the areas of cancer, diabetes and heart disease. The application is open with a deadline of Monday, December 5, 2016 at midnight. Funding will be announced in early April.

Capital/Naming Rights

This funding supports local capital projects and naming rights opportunities in honor of the late John L. Santikos. This bi-annual application process is currently closed and will reopen in 2018.

Children and youth grants are awarded through our Annual Responsive Grants process. The application opens on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 with a deadline of Friday, February, 10, 2017 at midnight. Grants are awarded on an annual basis to programs that enable children and families to lead safe and productive lives.

This application is currently closed. Applications open in June with a deadline in July. Funding is announced in November. Grants are awarded on an annual basis to programs that improve the safety and welfare of vulnerable and under-served populations, increase chances for individual/family success and self-sufficiency.

Disaster Relief Funding

Disaster Relief Funding In the event of a crisis, emergency or natural disaster, the San Antonio Area Foundation is here to help. Grant funding is available to 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations in Bexar, Atascosa, Bandera, Comal, Guadalupe, Kendall, Medina and Wilson counties. Disasters will be declared by the Area Foundation based on the thresholds commonly used by the federal, state or national nonprofit agencies.

High School Completion

Grants are awarded to out-of-school time programs that provide academic, recreational and cultural activities to keep youth in school. The  application is currently closed and will re-open February 2017 with a deadline of March 2017 at midnight. Funding is announced June 2017.

Medicine & Healthcare

Medicine and Healthcare grants are awarded through our Annual Responsive Grants process. The application opens on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 with a deadline of Friday, February, 10, 2017 at midnight. Grants are awarded on an annual basis to programs that enable children and families to lead safe and productive lives with an emphasis on reducing obesity and diabetes, are preventative in nature or educate the community in prevention, and/or increase access to comprehensive healthcare, including dental, vision and mental services.

Special and Urgent Needs Special and Urgent Needs Funding is an ongoing grants process that is always open for organizations who must continue to meet their mission while managing an unbudgeted, unforeseen and time-sensitive emergency or help the organization take advantage of an unexpected opportunity that will enhance its work.

Strengthening Nonprofits

Grants are awarded in a two-phase process. Applications can be submitted any time throughout the year, with varying deadlines based on the phase of funding the organization applies for. Funding is available for leadership training, staff development, strategic planning, technology resources and other areas that will build the capacity of nonprofit organizations, enabling them to better fulfill their mission.

Programs Serving the African American population
