Grants

The San Antonio Area Foundation makes grants from our funds, with help from our donors, to nonprofit organizations improving the quality of life in Bexar County and the following surrounding counties: Frio, Atascosa, Karnes, Wilson, Guadalupe, Gonzales, Comal, Blanco, Kendall, Gillespie, Kerr, Bandera and Medina.

We offer grants in the following areas:

Animal Services

Animal services grants are awarded through our Community Grants process. Applications open June 15, 2015 with a deadline of July 17, 2015 at midnight. Funding is announced in mid-November. Grants are awarded on an annual basis to programs that improve the health and wellness of animals, educate our community about animal care and/or provide spay/neuter and/or adoption services.

Arts & Culture

Arts and culture grants are awarded through our Community Grants process. Applications open June 15, 2015 with a deadline of July 17, 2015 at midnight. Funding is announced in mid-November. Grants are awarded on an annual basis to programs that promote accessibility to the arts, encourage broad participation from all parts of our community and/or provide arts education and outreach.

Biomedical Research

Grants are awarded on an annual basis to programs in the areas of cancer, diabetes and heart disease. Applications open November 7, 2014 with a deadline of December 15 at midnight. Funding is announced in mid-March 2015.

Children & Youth

Children and youth grants are awarded through our Community Grants process. Applications open January 5, 2015 with a deadline of February 6, 2015 at midnight. Funding is announced in mid-May. Grants are awarded on an annual basis to programs that enable children and families to lead safe and productive lives.

Medicine & Healthcare

Medicine and Healthcare grants are awarded through our Community Grants process. Applications open January 5, 2015 with a deadline of February 6, 2015 at midnight. Funding is announced in mid-May. Grants are awarded on an annual basis to programs that promote healthy lifestyles with an emphasis on reducing obesity and diabetes, are preventative in nature or educate the community in prevention, and/or increase access to comprehensive healthcare, including dental, vision and mental services.

Seniors and Community-at-Large

Seniors and Community-at-Large grants are awarded through our Community Grants process. Applications open June 15, 2015 with a deadline of July 17, 2015 at midnight. Funding is announced in mid-November. Grants are awarded on an annual basis to programs that improve the safety and welfare of vulnerable and under-served populations, increase chances for individual/family success and self-sufficiency and/or enhance the quality of life for seniors

High School Completion

Grants are awarded to out-of-school time programs that provide academic, recreational and cultural activities to keep middle school youth in school. Applications are closed for 2014 and 2015. In 2014, we awarded grants to span two years. The next application opening will be February 2016.

Strengthening Nonprofits

Grants are awarded in a two-phase process. Applications can be submitted any time throughout the year, with varying deadlines based on the phase of funding the organization applies for. Funding is available for leadership training, staff development, strategic planning, technology resources and other areas that will build the capacity of nonprofit organizations, enabling them to better fulfill their mission.

Programs Serving the African American population

The application process will tentatively open in October or November 2014. Please continue to check back for more information. To be eligible for funding, a program must serve a population that is at least 70 percent African American.

Applications tentatively open in January 2015. Please continue to check back for more information. To be eligible for funding, a program must serve a population that is at least 51 percent Hispanic.
