The San Antonio Area Foundation makes grants from our funds, with help from our donors, to nonprofit organizations improving the quality of life in Bexar County and the following surrounding counties: Frio, Atascosa, Karnes, Wilson, Guadalupe, Gonzales, Comal, Blanco, Kendall, Gillespie, Kerr, Bandera and Medina.

Cycle One:

Application opens Tuesday, Jan. 16 with a deadline of Friday, Feb. 16 at 11:59 p.m.

Funding Categories: 

Children and Youth
Programs that enable children and families to lead safe and productive lives. 

Medicine and Healthcare
Programs that promote healthy lifestyles with an emphasis on reducing obesity and diabetes, are preventative in nature or educate the community in prevention, and/or increase access to comprehensive healthcare, including dental, vision and mental services.

Funding Categories:

Animal Services 
Programs that improve the health and wellness of animals, educate our community about animal care and/or provide spay/neuter and/or adoption services. 

Arts and Culture
Programs that promote accessibility to the arts, encourage broad participation from all parts of our community and/or provide arts education and outreach. 

Programs that improve the safety and welfare of vulnerable and under-served populations, increase chances for individual/family success and self-sufficiency. 

 Programs that enhance the quality of life for seniors.

Biomedical Research

Grants are awarded on an annual basis to programs in the areas of cancer, diabetes and heart disease. Funding will be announced in early April. The application is currently closed.

Capital/Naming Rights

This funding supports local capital projects and naming rights opportunities in honor of the late John L. Santikos. This bi-annual application process is currently closed and will reopen Monday, Jan. 8, with a deadline of Sunday, Feb. 18 at 11:59 p.m.

Disaster Relief Funding

Disaster Relief Funding In the event of a crisis, emergency or natural disaster, the San Antonio Area Foundation is here to help. Grant funding is available to 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations in Bexar, Atascosa, Bandera, Comal, Guadalupe, Kendall, Medina and Wilson counties. Disasters will be declared by the Area Foundation based on the thresholds commonly used by the federal, state or national nonprofit agencies.

Special and Urgent Needs Special and Urgent Needs Funding is an ongoing grants process that is always open for organizations who must continue to meet their mission while managing an unbudgeted, unforeseen and time-sensitive emergency or help the organization take advantage of an unexpected opportunity that will enhance its work.

Strengthening Nonprofits

Grants are awarded in a two-phase process. Applications can be submitted any time throughout the year, with varying deadlines based on the phase of funding the organization applies for. Funding is available for leadership training, staff development, strategic planning, technology resources and other areas that will build the capacity of nonprofit organizations, enabling them to better fulfill their mission.
