Q. What is the deadline for submitting the application for the 2019 process?

The application deadline is Sunday, July 28, at 11:59 p.m. Staff will be available to assist you until 4 p.m. on Friday, July 26.

Q. How much money will you be awarding in each of the 6 focus areas?

At this time, we have not predetermined an amount for each of the 6 focus areas. We will be looking at the number of applications that are submitted in each area and making decisions based on need. We will have $3 million available for our 2019 Annual Responsive process.

Q. Will you be providing multi-year funding opportunities through this process?

We will not provide multi-year operating grants at this time, but we will be looking closely to see if it is something we can offer in the future.

Q. What is the timeline for the 2019 grant process?

General timeline below:

  • June 17-28 we will hold Information sessions
  • Friday, June 21, application opens
  • Sunday, July 28, application closes at 11:59 p.m. (5 weeks to submit)
  • Aug.-Oct., staff/committee review
  • Nov./Dec., email notifications of awards/denial and checks mailed off before end of year

Q. Will the 2019 process be the same process you will use in 2020?

The 2020 process will be different from our 2019 process, however, several of the small changes we made this year will likely be part of the process for future years. This year we added questions around equity and community engagement. 

Q. What criteria do I need to apply?

  • Those eligible to submit applications include nonprofit organizations exempt from federal income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, schools, churches or governmental bodies that serve Bexar and surrounding counties.
  • Provide services in one of the following eight counties: Atascosa, Bandera, Bexar, Comal, Guadalupe, Kendall, Medina, Wilson.
  • Must have a minimum of one year as an IRS designated 501(c)(3) by June 21,  2019.
  • Must have a minimum budget of $40,000.

Q. What is not funded by the Area Foundation?

  • Endowments
  • Debt reduction
  • Scholarships for colleges and universities (through this process)
  • Funds to individuals 
  • Capital Campaigns (through this process)
  • Political activities, organizations, or lobbying efforts intended to influence legislation

Q. What does a complete grant application include?

The application includes questions about your organization, narrative questions, board of directors and staff information sections, and the following attachments:

  • Financial Summary
  • Audited Financial Statements (If Audited Financial Statements are not available, send Balance Sheet and Statement of Revenues/Expenses for most recent fiscal year. Do not submit IRS Form 990)

Q. What are you looking for when evaluating my application?

The rubric for evaluation will take the four areas below into consideration. Questions on the application (where necessary) are labeled with the areas below to help you better determine how you would like to respond:

  • Community Impact
  • Investment in Equity
  • Strength of Organization
  • Financial Strength

Q. Is there a minimum or maximum amount of funding that can be requested?

Actually, there is no request on the part of the applicant. The maximum amount awarded per agency is dependent on your budget size. Award amounts have been predetermined for 2019. Budget ranges and award amount are listed below.

Q. How do we determine our agency budget size?

Grant awards are predetermined by budget size for our 2019 Annual Responsive process. Please use the information below to help determine your organization's budget.

  • For universities and colleges, please enter the program or department budget amount.
  • For national or statewide organizations, please enter the budget amount for the local office(s) serving our 8-county area.
  • When entering your organization's budget do not include in-kind revenues and expenses.

Q. Can an organization submit more than one grant application for the 2019 Annual Responsive process?

Each organization may submit only one application with the following exceptions:

  • Colleges and universities may submit multiple applications but may not submit the same application in more than one department/program area.
  • An organization serving as the fiscal agent for an application from an existing partnership or collaboration may also submit an application for its own organization. In such a situation, each of these applicants must demonstrate that the organizations involved have a history of partnering or collaborating with one another.
  • For the past eight years, organizations have been able to submit high school completion and annual responsive grant applications in the same year. Beginning in 2019, organizations may submit only one application, high school completion will not be a separate process this year.
  • Similarly, Strengthening Nonprofit grant applications were accepted in addition to annual responsive and high school completion grant applications. Beginning in 2019, Strengthening Nonprofits will no longer be a separate process.
  • Santikos Capital/Naming Rights grants will continue to be in addition to annual responsive grant applications and will be conducted on a biennial (every two years) basis. There will not be a Santikos Capital/Naming Rights grant process in 2019.

Q. If an organization does not have audited financial statements, what documentation is required?

If your organization does not have audited financial statements, submit a Balance Sheet and Statement of Revenues/Expenses for the most recent fiscal year. Both statements are required. (Do not submit IRS Form 990.)

Q. If an organization does not have three years of financial summary information, what is required to be submitted?

If an organization does not have three years of budget information, provide all available financial history. In other words, complete the financial summary for the year(s) the organization has been in operation.

Q. Does the Area Foundation award both full and partial grants?

For our 2019 process, award amounts have been predetermined. There will not be partial grants. If you are selected for an award you will receive the amount predetermined for your budget size.

Q. When are grants awarded?

All applicants will be notified by early-December 2019 and grants will be awarded mid-December 2019.
