Disaster Relief Funding

In the event of a crisis, emergency or natural disaster, the San Antonio Area Foundation is here to help.

Grant funding is available to 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations in Bexar, Atascosa, Bandera, Comal, Guadalupe, Kendall, Medina and Wilson counties. Disasters will be declared by the Area Foundation based on the thresholds commonly used by the federal, state or national nonprofit agencies.

Important note:

Grant applications will be accepted once a disaster has been declared in one of our eight-county funding area. A disaster has not been declared at this time.


What we fund:

  • Assist those impacted by industrial accidents and widespread weather events
  • Assist with money that can be used for food supplies, prescriptions/medical not covered by insurance, emergency shelter and cleanup of the disaster
  • Support for those who cannot get assistance from other sources or whose losses are not covered by insurance

What We Do Not Fund

For the Disaster Relief Funding grants, we do not make grants for:

  • Endowments
  • Capital campaigns
  • Religious purposes
  • Individuals
  • Debt reduction
  • Indirect costs
  • Scholarships for colleges, universities and trade schools
  • Political activities, organizations, or lobbying efforts intended to influence legislation
  • Non-emergency work that has already been completed
  • Operating deficits or deficits due to:
    • Gradual loss of funding
    • Loss of government funding
    • Waiting for government reimbursement
  • Startup program expenses
  • Operating expenses for strategic planning, organizational development needs or ongoing program work
  • Expenses that should have been anticipated or result from failure to exercise proper maintenance or duty of care

Application Procedures

Applications for the Disaster Relief Funding are accepted and reviewed on an on-going basis. An approval or denial notification will be sent to grant applicant within six business days of submission. 

Organizations wishing to apply must complete one copy of the online application and budget form plus the documentation:

  • A list of the board of directors and their community or professional affiliations
  • The current year's annual organization budget
  • Bids from consultants, contractors or vendors, if applicable

Additional information may be requested once your application is reviewed. Applicants will generally be notified of decisions approximately three - six days after receipt of an application.

Additional Information

  • To be eligible for funding applicant organizations must:
    • Be a tax-exempt organization under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code
    • Provide programs and services directly benefiting Bexar County and the residents of the surrounding seven contiguous counties
  • Grants will be awarded on an as needed basis. The application will be available beginning April 1, 2016. At any time after that, you may access, save, complete and submit the application. There is no deadline. Applications will be processed within upon receipt Monday through Friday, not including holidays.
  • All grant seekers must create an account to access the online application. Please click here to create your account. You will receive an email confirming you have created an account. 
  • Each organization may submit only one application at a time.
  • Applications must be submitted electronically. Any application sent to an individual staff member of the Area Foundation cannot be accepted. We will not accept emails, faxes or hard copies.
  • When you have submitted your application, you will receive an automated response stating the Area Foundation has received your application. If you do not receive an automated response after submitting, please contact Gavin Nichols at gnichols@saafdn.org or 210.242.4720.
  • Approval or denial notification will be sent to grant applicant within six business days of submission.

Applications are reviewed by the committee of San Antonio Area Foundation staff and a review committee of the Santikos Foundation Board of Trustees .
