Check out our events calendar to view updated workshops and special training events designed for nonprofit Board members, such as:

  • Board Principles Series: We host a quarterly series of training sessions based on the “Principles for Board Governance and Ethical Practice”. Developed by The Panel on the Nonprofit Sector, these 33 principles provide board guidance in four areas --legal compliance, effective governance, financial oversight and responsible fundraising.   • Board Day - Learn about Board Day 2019Board Day is an in-depth conference that provides nonprofit and foundation board members with the tools to lead their organizations to achieve maximum impact. The goal is to increase the effectiveness of nonprofits by enhancing board governance.
  • Board Boot Camp - June 6: Nonprofit boards play a critical role in overseeing their organization’s mission, finances and strategic direction. Whether you are new to nonprofit board service, or need a refresher course, this one-day workshop will provide you with comprehensive tools and networking opportunities to help you strengthen your board and ensure your organization’s success.   • Reggie Williams Resource Library: Board members may also take advantage of our Reggie Williams Resource Library, which is free and open to the public. The library features more than 200 hard copy volumes available for in-house use on subjects related to nonprofit management, fundraising, leadership and more.

Here are some helpful online resources for Board members:

A resource for funders, partners, and nonprofit leaders who want to magnify their impact within their community through exceptional governance practices. BoardSource supports a community of more than 90,000 individuals with customized diagnostics, live and virtual trainings, membership programs, and a comprehensive library of governance resources and publications that include original content. BoardSource is a 501(c)(3) organization. - General Nonprofit Board Information is a resource database with volunteer opportunities, nonprofit jobs, internships, and organizations working to change the world.

National Council of Nonprofits - Boards and Governance
A resource and advocate for America’s charitable nonprofits. Through their network of State Associations and 25,000-plus members, the Council serves as a central coordinator and mobilizer to help nonprofits achieve greater collective impact in local communities across the country. CompassPoint - CompassPoint is an electronic newsletter for members of nonprofit boards of directors. Board Café offers a menu of ideas, information, opinion, news, and resources to help board members in carrying out the responsibilities of their board service.

Governance Matters
An organization whose purpose is to encourage and promote good governance in the nonprofit sector. Its web site posts information on good governance, links to other sites of interest to not-for-profit boards and information about courses and conferences for nonprofit board members.

Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance
The BBB publishes standards for not-for-profit organizations that are used in its evaluations of charities and which are posted on its web site. The standards address issues such as governance, financial accounting, program efficiency and public disclosure. The web site also contains guidelines for implementation of the standards.

Charity Navigator
Charity Navigator rates organizations that solicit the public and provides information to prospective donors.

Candid (Formerly Foundation Center and Guidestar)
Through research, collaboration, and training, Candid connects people who want to change the world to the resources they need to do it. Candid's data tools on nonprofits, foundations, and grants are the most comprehensive in the world. Foundation Center and GuideStar joined forces to become Candid, a 501c3 nonprofit organization. The Area Foundation is a proud partner of Candid’s Funding Information Network.

Board Effect
Website offers an array of blogs, white papers and other nonprofit board requests. This organization sells an online portal that facilitates board information sharing.
