Learning Objectives:

  • Read and interpret application guidelines;
  • Identify data resources in developing compelling case statements;
  • Conduct literature reviews and citations;
  • Register and apply for federal and state funding via online submission;
  • Develop a time line for grant submission;
  • Understand and effectively write key elements of a federal proposal;
  • Conduct a community needs assessment;
  • Develop realistic budgets;
  • Write project abstracts and narratives;
  • Develop logic models
  • Understand how federal grants are scored;
  • Build your application online;
  • Avoid pitfalls of federal grant writing.
This workshop is included in the Nonprofit Management Certification series and fulfills six hours in the Fundraising competency area.

Meet Our Presenter:

Our presenter for this workshop is Jack Smith, M.P.A., Principal Consultant, The Smith Group. Mr. Smith is a nationally-recognized grant writer based in Freeport, Maine. Since 1987, his consulting practice has contracted training services to more than 200 organizations. Each year, more than 2000 participants attend one of his classes. He has taught grantwriting skills for the state governments of Connecticut, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, New Hampshire, North Carolina, and Vermont and for agencies and clients of the U.S. Department of Education, the U.S. Department of Energy, CDC and the Cherokee Nation. He serves as adjunct instructor for professional development programs at the University of Southern Maine, the University of Georgia, Emory University, Duke University and Austin Community College. Mr. Smith earned a master of public administration degree from the University of Maine. In 1986, the U.S. Department of Energy presented a national Award for Energy Innovation to Mr. Smith’s Self-Help Weatherization Program Model. 

REFUND/CREDIT POLICY: The San Antonio Area Foundation has a strict no refund policy.

If the registrant is not able to attend the workshop and/or class, a substitute may be sent. If a workshop and/or class has been unexpectedly cancelled and/or postponed by the Area Foundation, a refund or credit towards another workshop and/or class will be issued. No refunds or credits will be given for cancellations received less than 48 hours before a workshop.
