This workshop guides participants through a process that focuses on the different steps needed to build an effective board and presents background information on committees and board structures and answers common questions about governance models and board engagement.


One of the most important responsibilities of a board is to ensure that it continually adds qualified new members to its roster and keeps them engaged. Board building and best practices in governance is an ongoing process that requires deliberate and thoughtful attention.  

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the nine steps to finding, recruiting and engaging nonprofit board members to increase board capacity and effectiveness.
  • Gather ideas for improving the effectiveness and composition of the board.
  • Learn that there are a variety of ways to organize a board, and to articulate why there is no “right” governance model for all boards.
  • Understand how meeting tools such as dashboards and consent agendas can help to avoid common board meeting problems and increase engagement.

Meet our Presenter:

Jennifer Moriarty is the founder of the Moriarty Consulting Group. She is unique in the facilitation community due to her more than three decades in corporate and nonprofit finance roles, coupled with extensive involvement in the local community. She draws deeply from this leadership base to provide a solid experiential foundation to support her clients. Jennifer believes in the power of shared ideas and thoughtful, intentional processes to determine actions that will create successful outcomes. Jennifer holds an MBA in Operational Management from St. Mary’s University, a BBA in Finance from Texas State University, and has received additional training through numerous banking, compliance and community development training programs. She is certified as an Economic Development Finance Professional by the National Development Council. Jennifer holds a certificate in Public Participation from the International Association for Public Participation and is a Board Source Certified Governance Trainer. She is a Qualified Trainer through the Institute of Cultural Affairs and carries a national certification as a Certified ToP® Facilitator (CTF).  She is a Texas Education Agency registered provider for continuing education for Texas school board members.

REFUND/CREDIT POLICY: The San Antonio Area Foundation has a strict no refund policy.
If the registrant is not able to attend the workshop and/or class, a substitute may be sent. If a workshop and/or class has been unexpectedly cancelled and/or postponed by the Area Foundation, a refund or credit towards another workshop and/or class will be issued. No refunds or credits will be given for cancellations received less than 48 hours before a workshop.
