Participants at this workshop will learn to develop mission-focused volunteer opportunities, methods to recruit people, and techniques to support and retain volunteers once they are engaged.


Obtaining and retaining volunteers requires a strategic process for a nonprofit to recruit the people and skills it needs to serve its clients. When a volunteer program is well-managed, it aids in volunteer retention. These three areas - recruiting, managing, and retaining volunteers - will be woven together to help determine the components of a well-run volunteer program. 

Recruitment is not a “Y’all come” proposition. Recruitment must  consider the skills the nonprofit needs to complete its mission. Various methods to recruit volunteers will be discussed. The basics of a well-run volunteer program will be covered and participants will learn a well-managed volunteer program ties directly into retention.

Meet our Presenter:

Kathleen McCleskey has developed and presented workshops to over 16,000 participants.  These workshops included participants from diverse backgrounds, education, nationality and heritage.  The workshops she delivered were conducted in the United States, Egypt (USAID), Spain, Guam, Germany, Holland, Korea, Canada, Malawi (USAID), Jamaica (MIND), Japan, Thailand (USAID) and Belgium.

Kathleen is a certified strategic planner in the Cornerstone Organizational Planning© process.  Although she has conducted “how to” training in strategic planning, as well as worked with organizations in the area of strategic planning, she is now certified in this process.  The process fits exceptionally well with her philosophy of how an organization can work effectively and achieve commitment from all its members.

Kathleen has a Masters of Human Relations from the University of Oklahoma and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Maryland. She has co-authored a book on interviewing skills and a second book on community connections.   She conducts online courses for graduate and undergraduate students at the University of North Texas. The courses include Volunteer Program Planning and Evaluation, Leadership Theory and Practice for Volunteer Managers, Volunteer Management Concepts and Applications, and Social Evolutions of Contemporary Volunteerism.   She has also developed two online continuing education courses – Are You Really Ready for Volunteers and Seven Steps to a Successful Recruitment Campaign. She lives in Liberty Hill, Texas.

If the registrant is not able to attend the workshop and/or class, a substitute may be sent. If a workshop and/or class has been unexpectedly cancelled and/or postponed by the Area Foundation, a refund or credit towards another workshop and/or class will be issued. No refunds or credits will be given for cancellations received less than 48 hours before a workshop.
