Small and mid-level donors are very important to any fundraising program, but a significant major gift can be transformational for an organization. There are no ruby slippers waiting to be clicked with a wish when it comes to major gifts, and it is rare for nonprofits to stumble on one of those transformational gifts. But, with the right plan and program, raising funds from major gifts is a reasonable aspiration. Join us for an interactive session designed to help the mid-level professional launch their organization’s major gifts program.

What will participants learn

After completing this class, participants will be able to:


  1. Use their organization’s mission to motivate volunteers and secure leadership support, 2. Develop an organizational vision for major gifts, 3. Organize a major gifts program, 4.       Help volunteers overcome their resistance to asking for gifts, 5. Respond to objections in your presentation, and 6. Define the roles of board and staff in major gift fundraising

Who should attend this class?


Development professionals from organizations that have a strong existing annual giving program and seeking to start or grow a major gifts program. This class is for mid-level development professionals who understand the basic principles of fundraising and are ready to take their organization to the next level of philanthropy.

This workshop is included in our Nonprofit Management Certification series and fulfills three hours in the Fundraising competency area.

Meet our Presenter:

Carrie Gray, Co-Founder, and Principal of Burnam | Gray brings 27 years of progressive experience in the areas of resource development, strategy, budgeting, organizational development, community partnerships, communications, and creating highly effective teams. Carrie has led teams ranging from two people to a 28-person division focused on resource development, donor services, marketing, communications, advocacy, and volunteer services.

She has led and managed organizational change in each of her professional positions ranging from the creation and implementation of a new fundraising program to the retirement of an iconic President/CEO, to program acquisition and the restructuring of an entire division at the YWCA Seattle | King | Snohomish in Seattle, Washington.  She has her B.S. in Education from Indiana University, Bloomington, IN.
