Overview

The “Legal Compliance” session of our Board Principles series will cover seven principles related to the board’s responsibilities and practices in terms of implementing conflict of interest and whistleblower policies, assisting charitable organizations in complying with their legal obligations and providing information to the public.

Description

The Panel on the Nonprofit Sector, convened by Independent Sector and supported by BoardSource, developed “Principles for Good Governance and Ethical Practice” in 2007.  They identified 33 principles designed to guide board members and staff professionals of charitable organizations as they work to improve their own operations.  The San Antonio Area Foundation is presenting these 33 principles over four sessions to be held quarterly throughout the year .  The “Legal Compliance” session will cover seven principles related to the board’s responsibilities and practices in terms of implementing conflict of interest and whistleblower policies, assisting charitable organizations in complying with their legal obligations and providing information to the public.

Who should take this class?

Board members, Executive Directors, professional staff and administrative staff who support Board members or meetings.

This workshop is included in our Nonprofit Management Certification series and fulfills three hours in the Nonprofit Governance competency area.

Cost:  $60.00

REFUND/CREDIT POLICY: The San Antonio Area Foundation has a no refund policy. If a workshop and/or class has been unexpectedly cancelled and/or postponed by the Area Foundation, a refund or credit towards another workshop and/or class will be issued. If a registrant is unable to attend a workshop and/or class, a substitute may be sent or a credit may be issued. No credits will be given for cancellations received less than 48 hours before a workshop.

Meet our Presenter:

Andrea March joined Texas RioGrande Legal Aid, the nation’s third largest provider of free civil legal services, in 2007. In 2011, she joined TRLA’s Community Building with Attorney Resources (Texas CBAR) program, a statewide pro bono attorney referral program for nonprofits, and more recently joined TRLA’s Community Development team. As an attorney, her work has centered on providing capacity-building trainings, legal resources, and legal guidance for community based nonprofit groups whose charitable work serves low-income Texans. Past legal experience includes creating and managing a statewide assisted pro se legal program for survivors of domestic violence; appellate work as an Assistant Attorney General; and as a judicial clerk to the Hon. Judge M.P. Duncan III, Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. She holds a J.D. cum laude from South Texas College of Law and B.A. in International Relations through a joint program with the University of Florida, Gainesville, and Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, Poland.
