The Annual Responsive Grants process has been strategically designed to leverage community leadership, convening power, and capacity building efforts to advance equity in San Antonio. By providing general operating awards, we take an asset-based approach to allow organizations to focus on mission to address the needs of individuals and communities they serve.
Our primary four impact areas include: Cultural Vibrancy, Livable and Resilient Communities, Successful Aging, and Youth Success. Each impact area has a dedicated Program Officer to build relationships with nonprofits and lending support with technical assistance and problem solving.
By partnering with the community, the Annual Responsive Grants process aims to build a city where San Antonio area residents are deeply connected, have equitable opportunities to thrive, and contribute to the vitality of the community.
Information about our Annual Responsive Grants process can be found below. For information about our other grants please visit our Grants page.
2021 Annual Response Grantmaking
As 2021 launches, the San Antonio Area Foundation is updating our Annual Responsive funding process for 2021.
As a beneficiary in, and result of, the John L. Santikos bequest, the Area Foundation has awarded more than $70M of grants and programs in the community since 2014. The majority of these funds came from annual distributions from the Santikos Enterprises theatre operations/net profits. Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, theatre operations have suffered due to the pandemic, resulting in theatre closures and a decrease in the annual distribution. This unexpected turn of events will impact 2021 grantmaking in comparison to recent grant cycles.
To maximize the impact of available funds, we are shifting to multi-year funding through the extension of 2020 awards. We will not have a competitive grant process or application-based grants related to Santikos Capital and Naming Rights.
Like you, we are working to adapt our programming model and will continue to invest in programs that allow for the greatest impact with available resources through strategic partnerships and capacity building. The Community Engagement and Impact team will be available to work alongside our nonprofit partners as you continue to develop and implement your recovery plans.
We want to be transparent with our partners about the grant process and funds available this year to allow time for your organization to adjust and plan as needed. Our programs outside of Annual Responsive grantmaking will continue to serve our nonprofit partners: Learning and Organizational Development workshops, access to Foundation Directory Online, and use of our facilities within the restrictions required for safe gathering when we reopen our offices.
As always, if you have questions or need to discuss ideas that you have, please contact your program officer or our VP of Community Engagement and Impact, Patricia Mejia, at email@example.com, 210.775.1249. Our program officers’ contact information is included at the bottom of this page.
