The Thomas H. Flinn Fund for Adult Literacy benefits Each One Teach One Adult and Family Literacy Program of San Antonio (EOTOSA). This program provides one-on-one tutoring help to prepare for the successful completion of the GED exam. EOTOSA tutors adults who function below the eigth-grade level in reading, writing or math; or who need tutoring help to prepare for the successful completion of the GED exam.
EOTOSA is the only agency in San Antonio whose sole mission it to address the issue of adult illiteracy through individual tutoring. San Antonio has an acute problem with adult illiteracy – 25 percen of all San Antonio adults read below the fifth grade level. Furthermore, the city has a high school dropout rate of 40 percent. Through the use of community volunteers, EOTOSA assists adult learners in improving their reading, writing and math levels through two-hour tutoring sessions. Staff provides initial and ongoing student assessments, prepares lesson plans, and provides tutor training and support. The agency currently serves 100 students with 30 volunteer tutors.
In December 2012, the Flinn Family generously established a scholarship trust for EOTOSA students who cannot afford the registration fee for the GED exam. When it achieves its minimum financial goal of $10,000, the trust will consider requests for scholarship assistance by EOTOSA students, and provide either full or partial support based upon financial and personal circumstances. Donations to the fund are requested to help adults achieve their dream of completing high school and achieving further educational or career goals.
