Richard Goldsmith’s vision helped shape the San Antonio Area Foundation into what it is today, a trusted partner in philanthropy and a catalyst for community impact. What began with just $100,000 has grown into a legacy of generosity that has awarded more than $950 million since 1964, strengthening nonprofits and expanding opportunity across our region. Richard believed deeply in the power of community foundations to bring people together, invest in lasting solutions, and respond when it matters most. "This scholarship has made a significant impact on my ability to attend college by easing the financial burden on me and my family. It has allowed me to focus more on my studies and less on the stress of how to afford tuition, books, and other academic expenses. Thanks to this support, I am able to pursue my education with more confidence and motivation. With the help of this scholarship, I plan to pursue a degree in biology as I work toward a career in healthcare. This scholarship is helping me build the foundation I need to turn those dreams into reality."

Through the generosity of our donors and partners, the San Antonio Area Foundation continues to open doors for students across our region. In 2025, we reached a record milestone, awarding $14.4 million in scholarships to support educational dreams and expand access to opportunity.
All Hearts On Deck was launched in response to a moment of uncertainty for San Antonio’s nonprofit sector, when rising needs and tightening resources put essential organizations at risk. In that moment, the San Antonio Area Foundation joined with fellow partners—including Kronkosky Charitable Foundation, United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County, Methodist Healthcare Ministries, and H. E. Butt Foundation—to form the Beyond Giving group and align around a shared, collective response. All Hearts On Deck reflects that commitment in action, grounded in a simple truth: we all profit from nonprofits.
All Hearts on Deck is a community-wide initiative with one goal: make sure no neighbor loses access to the services they depend on. Because when nonprofits are strong, our whole community is stronger.
Nonprofits are more than charitable organizations. They are a vital part of our community’s infrastructure and economic engine. They support more than 87,000 local jobs and contribute billions in economic impact while delivering critical services that support families, strengthen the workforce, and improve quality of life. Today, federal funding shifts, state budget changes, and a shrinking pool of major funders are creating a perfect storm, putting unprecedented pressure on the organizations that hold our community together.
All Hearts on Deck mobilizes individuals, leaders, and organizations to advocate for and invest in the nonprofit sector. By shifting the narrative from charity to investment, elevating nonprofit value, and encouraging community action, such as engaging with elected officials, supporting nonprofits, and sharing their impact, we can strengthen this essential ecosystem together.
Our Learning and Development programs equip nonprofit leaders, staff, and board members with the tools, knowledge, and connections they need to grow their organizations and deepen their impact. By investing in capacity building, we help strengthen the entire nonprofit ecosystem—ensuring organizations are more effective, resilient, and prepared to meet the evolving needs of our community.

“These learning opportunities gave me a strong foundation for leading in a more intentional, values-driven way. They invited me to slow down, reflect, and really examine how I show up as a nonprofit leader. I walked away more grounded, with a deeper confidence in my ability to lead with clarity and calmness - even when the path ahead feels uncertain.”

Too many in our community are trapped in a constant state of survival mode. They need a lifeline.
That may look like a roof over a family’s head, a meal for a hungry child, or a shelter for a domestic violence survivor.
Put compassion into action by providing basic human needs.
If you believe that basic physiological needs like food, water, and shelter should not be considered a luxury, join like minded advocates in providing hope.
For many, the answer to, “How do I feed my family?” or “What happens if I don’t have medication?” is just a matter of a few dollars. This means that gifts of every size have an immediate and substantial impact on someone’s life.
Let’s put a stop to generational poverty.
Imagine shaving 21.6 years off your life expectancy based on one data point alone – your zip code.
Together, we can change that. But why stop there?

We must start now to build capacity for generations to come.
