Press Forward San Antonio

The San Antonio Area Foundation is the local chapter for a national effort to boost community news and information infrastructure.

The San Antonio Area Foundation, as the local chapter for Press Forward San Antonio, is part of a national movement working to strengthen access to reliable local news through coordinated, community-centered action. We envision co-creating a healthy local news ecosystem by aligning funders and deploying flexible, multi-year funding while safeguarding editorial independence.

Strong and healthy communities depend on access to reliable local news and information. But across our region, that access is becoming harder to find.
Newsrooms are closing, and fewer reporters are covering more ground, which leaves many communities without consistent information about schools, local government, public safety and health, and civic accountability.

THE LANDSCAPE

1,300+ U.S. communities are considered “news deserts.”

In Texas, 130+ counties have only one newsroom, and 30 counties have no existing newsrooms.

Texas ranks among the highest states for loss of local news outlets.

Fewer reporters today are covering more communities than at any point in decades.
THE VALUE

Research shows that a wide range of people in communities nationwide already care deeply about local news and information.

87%
of Americans
say local news matters
to them personally.

67%
of Americans
say they use local news to
make everyday decisions.

Communities with limited local news access face higher risks of misinformation and lower civic engagement.

HOW THE LOCAL NEWS FUND WORKS

This work requires sustained philanthropic support to strengthen long-term viability, resilience, and reach.

Mission

To build and support a more resilient, sustainable, and inclusive news and information ecosystem, so that everyone in the South Central Texas Region can find, access, and use verified journalism and the information they need to thrive.

Values

Inclusive Transformation

We believe in the power of a more accessible news and information ecosystem that is rooted in community, enabling all voices to be heard.

  • To amplify diverse perspectives and stories often excluded or misrepresented in mainstream and emerging media outlets.
  • We see journalism as a public good that must be accessible to the widest population regardless of economic, technological, or language differences.
  • We believe that news and information organizations must be rooted in truth, journalistic integrity, and independence.
  • We, the Area Foundation, and the Press Forward Chapter are committed to being open about our grantmaking process and delivering on what we say.
  • We believe that to close longstanding gaps, we need news and information organizations that value collaboration, connection, and visibility.
  • We will invest in ideas that will have lasting change in our communities, and efforts that are focused on meeting community information needs, expanding community-centered reporting, and closing the longstanding inequities in media ownership, distribution, and journalism participation of all individuals.
