The San Antonio Area Foundation offers a wide range of grant opportunities to local nonprofits.
Many are aware of the “responsive” process, at-large competitive grants traditionally made available annually but in recent years switched to a multi-year cycle.
But there are also other grant opportunities available to nonprofits annually, offered on top of responsive grants. See below for non-responsive grant opportunities the Area Foundation offers to nonprofits in 2025.

- Collaborative grants
- For nonprofits looking to innovate and/or grow key partnerships. $75,000 maximum for awards up to one year. Requires at least three partner organizations.
- Application period: 4/2/25 – 6/30/25.
- Capital grants
- For nonprofits conducting infrastructure development projects. Award sizes vary:
- Early-stage projects: Maximum $250,000.Late-stage projects: Maximum $350,000. Potential reserve: Up to $250,000.
- Application period: 6/2/25-9/1/25.
- For nonprofits conducting infrastructure development projects. Award sizes vary:
- Special and urgent needs grants
- For nonprofits seeking rapid response funding for unexpected emergencies. $10,000 maximum. Eligible categories:
- Community crises such as weather damage or vandalism/theft. Operational emergencies such as facility damage. Unplanned challenges such as leveraging needs requiring unbudgeted expenditures.
- Routine operating or program costs. Start-up costs. Endowments, capital campaigns and debt reduction. Planned personnel transitions, executive searches and strategic planning. Loss funding support from government or foundation sources. Lobbying expenses.
- Application period: Rolling with applications reviewed monthly.
- For nonprofits seeking rapid response funding for unexpected emergencies. $10,000 maximum. Eligible categories:
- Strengthening nonprofits grants
- For nonprofits looking to improve their organizational health and capacity.Eligible categories:
- Training and professional development.Early-stage capacity building.Organizational capacity building.Responsive capacity building.
- Fall under one of three categories:
- Pioneering – under five years in operation or volunteer-staffed with maximum $250,000 budget.Emerging – over five years in operation with $250,000-$1 million budget.Sustaining/In Transition – 10 years in operation with budget over $1 million.
