Did you know that the Area Foundation houses more 120 scholarship funds? That typically translates to more than $5 million awarded yearly, even more now with our new Legacy Scholarship.

Last week, we gathered along with dozens of students, donors and supporters to celebrate our 2023-2034 general (non-Legacy) scholarship recipients with a great event at Texas Public Radio’s Malú and Carlos Alvarez Studio.

“With this funding it does help a lot with school, for myself and other students as well,” said Miranda Ramirez, scholarship recipient who attends the University of the Incarnate Word. Miranda has a renewable scholarship that is renewable, and this is her second time being awarded.

The Area Foundation is privileged to be able to help students like Miranda purse their academic goals in higher education.

“It makes me proud with and for the work that I do for the students to be able to have access to college,” said Jennifer Ballesteros, Executive Director for Scholarship & Relief Programs at the Area Foundation.

She mentioned how our scholarships work speaks to our new vision of closing opportunity gaps for those who need it most in our community. Scholarships are also related to one of our four main grantmaking areas – Youth Success.

So, scholarship funds opened by companies and donors, the Area Foundation is able to bridge financial gaps students face when pursuing higher education.
